OCR: EN ROUTE FOR MARS VIKING 1 AND 2 Mars 4 and 5 The Mars 4 and 5 missions were designed for orbital study of Mars. Mars 4 was launched on July 21, 1973, from Baikonur; Mars 5 followed four days later. Both of these probes were standard spacecraft, to which Soviet scientists had added supplementary fuel tanks and scientific equipment for the orbital research. Mars 4 was to study the solar wind during the trip from Earth to Mars and within proximity of the Red Planet. However, the operation to place the probe in orbit on February 10, 1974, failed. Mars 4 flew past the planet at a distance of 2200 kilometers and obtained only 12 photographs. TAUR COMPLEX 41 VASK TITAN CONTAUN LAUSERES MARS BETAT
